Studies conducted at many levels of government and academia have been made on this question.

The data demonstrate a retail store is a Big Box begins after 32,000 sq'. That is when a store clearly become regional over just local. And that is why our Big Box ordinance is 32,000 sq'.

It was not an arbitrary number based on personal opinion, perspective or assumption.

At that level the negative impacts on municipal budgets, traffic and crime are all present.

Surprising as it may seem, smaller retail actually is more economically beneficial when ALL the factors are considered, not just raw gross. Not to mention smaller retail just isn't regional, thus lacking the traffic and crime impacts that Big Box magnets draw.

'Walmart Crews' and such, in example, are realities and known to police departments.
